Pavers, Hardscape & Outdoor Living for Desert Backyards

How pavers, retaining walls, and outdoor living spaces hold up in Las Vegas heat, and what to plan for before you build.

Hardscape carries more weight in a desert backyard than it does almost anywhere else. When water restrictions and heat limit how much turf and thirsty planting make sense, pavers, walls, and outdoor living structures become the backbone of the design instead of just an accent. Here's how we think about hardscape and outdoor living when we're building for the Las Vegas Valley.

Why Hardscape Matters More in the Desert Than Almost Anywhere Else

In climates with more forgiving water supplies, a backyard can lean heavily on lawn and planting beds and still function well. In the Mojave, hardscape often ends up covering more of the usable yard, which means the materials, layout, and installation quality matter even more than they would elsewhere. A patio, walkway, or wall built here has to hold up to intense summer heat, UV exposure, and the occasional heavy monsoon downpour, all in the same year.

Paver Patios and Walkways

Pavers remain one of the most popular hardscape choices in the valley because they combine durability with design flexibility: different colors, patterns, and textures let a patio or walkway fit almost any style of home. Beyond looks, properly installed pavers handle ground movement better than a single poured slab, since individual units can shift slightly with the base rather than cracking as one large piece.

Retaining Walls and Grade Changes

Plenty of valley properties deal with grade changes, whether from the original build or from years of soil settling. Retaining walls manage those changes, prevent erosion during monsoon rain, and often create usable flat space that didn't exist before, like a raised planting bed or a level seating area on a sloped side yard. Wall construction here has to account for both the load it's holding back and how the region's alkaline soil and occasional heavy rain interact with the wall's drainage.

Outdoor Kitchens and Living Spaces

Outdoor living is a big part of life in Las Vegas for a good chunk of the year, and outdoor kitchens, bars, and seating areas have become a standard ask on backyard projects. These spaces need to be planned around more than just where the grill goes: sun exposure through the day, prevailing wind, proximity to the house for utilities, and shade coverage all affect whether an outdoor kitchen actually gets used regularly or sits unused during the hottest months.

Fire Features and Shade Structures

Fire pits and fireplaces extend how much of the year an outdoor space gets used, especially through the valley's cooler months and evenings. On the flip side, shade structures (pergolas, ramadas, shade sails) are just as important for making a backyard usable during the day when summer sun is at its most intense. The best outdoor living designs plan for both ends of that seasonal swing rather than only building for one season.

Material Choices for Heat and UV

Material selection changes a lot in a high-heat, high-UV climate. Lighter-colored pavers and hardscape surfaces stay noticeably cooler underfoot than darker materials in direct sun, which matters for pool decks and patios where people are walking barefoot. Metal fixtures, wood structures, and fabric shade elements all need to be chosen with UV resistance and heat expansion in mind, since materials that hold up fine in milder climates can fade, warp, or degrade faster under constant Mojave sun.

Drainage: The Part Nobody Thinks About Until It's a Problem

Desert soil doesn't drain the way people expect, and monsoon season can dump a significant amount of rain in a short window. Hardscape that isn't graded and drained properly can direct water toward a foundation, pool equipment, or low spots in the yard, turning what should be a quick summer storm into a real problem. Drainage planning has to happen at the design stage, not as an afterthought once the pavers are already down.

Bringing It All Together

The strongest desert backyards treat hardscape, planting, and outdoor living as one connected plan rather than separate projects layered on top of each other over time. NLS Grounds Management holds landscape and masonry licensing and has been building and maintaining hardscape and outdoor living spaces across the Las Vegas Valley for more than 30 years, and is licensed, bonded, and insured. If you're planning a patio, wall, outdoor kitchen, or a full backyard redesign, reach out for a free estimate and we'll walk the space with you.
